In November 2014, we welcomed several new bloodlines into our herd. A rare 'Mermaid' Berkshire gilt, a gorgeous 'Trish' Kunekune gilt, and a selection of Tamworth's including the boar bloodlines 'Dreamboy' and 'Jasper' and a selection of gilts. These pigs all originated in prize winning herds such as The Fairoaks Herd, The Valstock Herd and The Tudful Herd and in the case of the Kunekune - the Barton Hill Farm Herd. It took many months to organise this shipment and we were delighted that the pigs finally made it to Kildare in November.
Having visited many of the Tamworth Breeders in the UK over the course of 2014, we were very happy to accept their invitation to act as Area representatives in Ireland. There are a growing number of Tamworth Breeders in the country and we hope to help 'spread the word' about the breed. The Tamworth is a very popular choice for Irish Small-holders. The fact that it has some Irish heritage and a ginger coat probably adds to it's appeal.
In 2014, a new society was formed to help, support and encourage Pig Keeping in Ireland. The first pig show in many years was held in Stradbally Hall in May 2014. The society was overwhelmed with visitors when it exhibited at the Ploughing Champiionships in Ratheniska in September 2014 and our Kunekune sow- Wendy got to show off her litter to the nation when she featured on RTE news.
News of upcoming events will be posted here or on their webpage www.irishpigsociety.com New members to the society are very welcome.
